This area has been designed to be a new growth center in southern West Java, however, the groundwater exploration effort in this area is still
insufficient. This research aims to explore groundwater in this area at preliminary stage.
The integrated study was conducted to find the potential of groundwater in this area. The methods used in this study are: (1) Geological mapping in order to know geological aspects and to find aquifer based on general characteristic of lithology, (2) petrological analysis to
calculate rock porosity with blue dye method. (3) Isopotential mapping in order to know distribution of hydraulic head and to establish groundwater flow model. (4) VES geolectrical survey in order to know the subsurface distribution of the aquifer, (5) chemistry and physical properties analyses of groundwater sample to determine the groundwater quality, and (6) stable isotop analysis of deuterium (2H) and Oxygen-18 (18O) to determine the groundwater process and to determine the elevation of recharge zone.
The result of this study shows that the study area can be divided into four lithologic units, i.e. Sandstone Unit, Tufaceous Sandstone Unit, Breccia Unit, and Alluvial Deposits. The study of groundwater potential shows that there are two potential aquifer systems in the study area, i.e. unconfined and confined aquifer. These aquifers belong to Sandstone Unit in the southern most of the study area with the porosity of about 15 – 20%. The porosity
type is intergranular and intragranular. Based on physical and chemical parameters, the groundwater in the study area can be used as drinking water source. The unconfined
aquifer is located at the depth interval of 12. 5 – 32.5 m asl with the thickness around 20 m, and the confined aquifer is located at the depth of 5 m asl – 28 m under sea level with the thickness about 33 – 38 m. The recharge area for the unconfined aquifer is located at the elevation interval of 380 – 695 m asl, with the groundwater flow direction is from northeast to southwest.
text
