SIZE AND DIMENSION DETERMINATION OF A SPECIFIC ANGKLUNG TUBE
Angklung is a traditional musical instrument form West Java, Indonesia. Each angklung that produces one single tune consists of two carved bamboos: a large one and a small one, both attached to a bamboo frame. Both tubes produce the same pitch from two adjacent octaves with the small one one octave...

Both tubes produce the same pitch from two adjacent octaves with the small one one octave higher. The frequency of sound produced by the angklung tube depends on the physical size of the carved bamboo. Until now, angklung craftsmen tune each angklung note manually, based on hereditary experiences. Adopting transversal vibration theory of a beam, the formula of a pitch frequency is derived in this final project. The formula depends on the size of the angklung tube; length and diameter of the resonator tube; length of the angklung blade and the thickness of the bamboo. The formula is tested with pitch measurement of a set of angklung, and good agreement. This formula is in line with experience of tuning an angklung tube by carving and cutting the tube. Furthermore, this formula could be used to predict an important parameter: the modulus Young divided by bamboo density. text |
