Methane gas is one of the gases contained in coal formed from organic material and trapped in the coal seam during the process of peatification and coalification.

The research area is administratively located in Paser Regency, East Kalimantan Province, while geographically and geogolically located at the coordinates 1154500"- 11550 00" east and 14500 "- 150'00" south and located in Pasir Subbasin which is still part of the Barito Basin. This research uses outcrop and core drilling data of BSCBM-01 and BSCBM-02 coal wells on Warukin Formation.

Proximate, ultimate, and organic petrography analyzes are used to determine the parameter of coal rank, origin and type of organic material, maseral composition, and maturity level of organic materials. Measurement of gas content aims to determine the content of methane gas in coal. Analysis and measurement results are used to determine the characteristics of coal on Warukin Formation to the potential of methane gas contained in it.

The results of the proximate analysis indicate that the rank of coal in the study area is included in the subbituminus classification, whereas the ultimate analysis indicates that the analyzed samples have dominant kerogen Type III which tend to produce gas. The average vitrinite reflectance is 0.45% consisting of the vitrinite maseral group as the main maseral group. Coal material dominantly derived from timber plants and deposited in a telmatic environment with an ombotrophic peat type of wet forest swamps. The result of composition and content of coalbed methane measurement at 300 - 500 meters depth, ranged from 68.89 - 96.32% and 14.31 - 97.72 scf/ton.
text
