Transportation Engineering, Magister Program of Civil Engineering, Institute of Technology Bandung. Fly ash is a finely pulverized residu from the combustion of coal in modem boiler plants such as steam electric power stations. So far, Indonesia has two Steam Electrical Power Stations, one is in Suryalaya Banten Province and second in Paiton East Java Province. Suryalaya Steam Electrical Power Stations produce 700.000 tons and Paiton produce 1.000.000 tons of fly ash annually. In enr,neering field, fly ash can be used as a raw material for artificial aggregate used in concrete mix. Artificial aggregate is normally used as a aggregate in lightweight concrete mix, but it can also be used in the asphalt concrete mix. In general, that the artificial aggregate commonly has high water absorption (>20 %), so that will be absorbed high asphalt content. Maximum water absorption of artificial aggregate for alt concrete mix should be less than 3 %. The water absorption in the artificial aggregate, depends on the kind of raw material and the heating process . The samples used in this experiment, the artificial aggregate made from fly ash (AT) and soil (IL), both of the material mixed in proportion (AT/TL) ; 100/0, 90/10, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, 50/50, 40/60, 30/70, 20/80,10/90, 0/100 by weigh, the next step it\'s heated at 1000°C, 1100°C and 1150°C. The best proportion of (AT/TL) was 60/40 heated at 1100°C and 1150°C. Mixture of the asphalt concrete were designed by the Marshall method, the material used in the mixtures such as from Pertamina it\'s has penetration 60/70, No IV Bina Marga mix gradation spec. The variation of asphalt content were 4 to 8 % for natural aggregate and 11 to 15 % for artificial aggregate and by 1 % increment of asphalt content respectively. The result indicate that the Optimum Asphalt Content (KAO) were 7.125 % for natural aggregate and asphalt content 14.375 for artificial aggregate. The Marshall test at ICAO for natural aggregate indicate that stability was 1220 kg. The artificial aggregate heated at 1100°C indicated that stability was 1160 kg and another temperature at 1150°C indicated that stability was 1200 kg. For natural aggregate and artificial aggregate which immersed in water at for 30 days , the result Marshall test at KAO with the natural aggregate showed that the stability was 1181 kg, for artificial aggregate heated at 1100°C indicated that stability was 1 092 kg and another temperature at 1150°C indicated that stability was 1051 kg. The estimation cost analysis of the asphalt concrete mixture by using the natural aggregate was Rp. 618.775/m and for artificial aggregate Rp. 1.030.500/m3. this indicate mixture with artificial aggregate was 66 % higher than cost of asphalt concrete containing natural aggregate. If cost is not a governing factor, this artificial aggregates can technically satisfy the requirements of asphaltic mixture for surface layers |
