Description
Summary:Increasing population, urbanization, and energy demand occurs alongside with decreasing oil reserves can threaten energy and national industry stability. The answer of this problem is using renewable resources such as plants as sustainable energy source and raw materials for industry. Beauty leaf (Calophyllum inophyllum) is a kind of plant that is not used for feedstock and has great protential as one of oil source in Indonesia. Up until now, the method which is often used for collecting oilseed from natural resourcesis extraction. Further research is needed to know the optimum condition to extract vegetable oil, especially beauty leaf oilseed. Oilseed from extraction then is used to produce biodiesel with transesterification that consists of several steps. Therefore, further research is needed to develop more efficient biodiesel production process.

The beauty leaf oilseed is extracted using soxhlet extraction with n-hexane as solvent and methanol and potassium hydroxide added. The variations done in the experiment are feed-to-solvent ratio, particle size, extraction time, methanol addition, and concentration of KOH added. Feed-to-solvent ratio varies from 50 gram / 400 mL and 50 gram / 500 mL. Extraction time varies from 2-6 hours, meanwhile particle size varies from 4-16 mesh. The amount of methanol added is equivalet to 1 and 1,5 time stoichiometrically. Concentration of potassium hydroxide used is 0,05 – 0,1 mol/L methanol. Oilseed then is tested by the acid number, saponification number, and iod number and then compared to standard value for diesel oil.

The beauty leaf oilseed extraction with feed-to-solvent ratio 50 gram / 500 mL with extraction time 6 hours and particle size 16 mesh is the most effective condition and giving the best oil quality. The oilseed still has high acid value so it doesn’t meet the standard for acid value. Addition of methanol and potassium hydroxide affect the oilseed especially decreasing the acid value. Beauty leaf oilseed extraction on optimum condition with methanol addition equivalent to 1,5 times stoichiometrically and potassium hydroxide addition as much as 0,1 mol/L methanol decreasing acid value from 29 mg KOH/g to 27 mg KOH/g. Nevertheless, the acid number is still higher than the standard of acid value according to SNI.
