Fish is one of the main sources of animal protein which is preferred by Indonesian in general. Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a superior commodity in Indonesia and easy to breed and cultivated. Kale (Brassica oleracea var. Acephala) is a vegetable that is highly nutritious and has high economic value. The population growth has also impacted on land and clean water availability. Aquaponic system using RAS is an alternative cultivation technique that can be used as a solution to these problems. The study aims to measure the growth, survival rate, and feed conversion ratio of nile tilapia in aquaponic system with kale using RAS, and to compare them with other existing techniques, and also evaluate the system’s water quality that affects the growth and survival rate of nile tilapia. The research was conducted in a greenhouse at Laboratorium Teknik XI Institut Teknologi Bandung for 28 days using a 2-months old nile tilapia and 17days after seedling kale. The parameters measured in this research are absolute weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), survival rate (SR), and water quality. The result of this study shows that the average absolute weight gain of nile tilapia was 4.89 g, 1.96%/day for SGR, 1.13 for FCR, 98.17% for SR, and the average values for water quality were: 27.42oC for temperature, 3.49 mg/L for dissolved oxygen, 6.75 for acidity level, with 1.33 mg/L amonia concentration, 3.13 mg/L nitrite concentration, and 13.83 mg/L nitrate concentration. RAS has better value in absolute weight gain, SGR, and FCR compared to the conventional system, whilst its SR value is the best amongst conventional aquaponics and conventional systems. The system’s water quality that affects the growth and survival rate of nile tilapia includes dissolved oxygen, amonia and nitrite concentration.

text |
