GEOLOGICAL STUDY AND CHARACTERISTIC OF COAL IN SUNGAIDANAU, SATUI, SOUTH KALIMANTAN

The research area is located in Sungaidanau, Satui, Tanah Bumbu Regency, South Kalimantan Province and located between coordinate 305000 - 315000 mE dan 9586000 - 9591000 mS (UTM WGS 84 Zone 50S). The width of research area is 50 km2. The purposes of this research are to determine the geological setting and coal characteristics by using study of literatures, geomorphological analysis, stratigraphy, structure, and petrography. Geomorphology in research area is divided into three geomorphological units, those are: Peneplain Unit of Sungaidanau, Colluvial Fan Unit of Sungaidanau, and Isolated Hill of Tandui. The stage of rivers in the research area is included into mature stage. Stratigraphy in research area is divided into three units, those are: Sandstone Unit which is deposited in upper submarine fan during Late Cretaceous, Sandstone – Claystone Unit which is deposited in fluvial – delta environment during Eocene and unconformably with older lithological unit, and Limestone Unit which is deposited in offreef slope during Oligocene – Late Miocene and conformably with older lithological unit. Coal in the research area is deposited in Sandstone – Claystone Unit. There are 10 coal seams in research area that are being analyzed its depositional environment, rank, and type. The coal in research area is deposited in upper to lower delta plain and ranked as high volatile bituminous B. The type of the coals are vitrinite dominant coal.
