ANALYSIS OF SOIL QUALITY BASED ON PHYSICAL, CHEMICAL, AND SOIL MACRO FAUNA PROPERTIES AT DIFFERENT LAND COVERS IN COAL MINING AREA, SITE SEBAKIS, NUNUKAN DISTRICT

Soil is one of the ecosystem services for supporting living organism. Open pit mining system impacts soil degradation, especially in soil quality. Some researches that have been done before are not focused on soil quality scoring in pre mining site. This research’s objectives are to quantify soil...

Open pit mining system impacts soil degradation, especially in soil quality. Some researches that have been done before are not focused on soil quality scoring in pre mining site. This research’s objectives are to quantify soil quality based on physical and chemical characteristic, and soil macro fauna. The assessment are done in four different land covers, which are primary forest, secondary forest, palm oil plantation and open land. Samples are taken five times in each land covers. Intact soil samples are taken using core sampler for physical analysis (bulk density and porosity). Composite soil samples are taken by auger for texture and chemical analysis (pH, C-organic, N-total, P-available, and K-available). Monolith plot is used for soil macro fauna analysis with 25 cm x 25 cm width and 30 cm height. Soil quality is analyzed using soil quality index based on Mukhopadhyay (2014). The results are shown as follow: soil texture in primary forest is loamy sand, in secondary forest is sandy loam, in palm oil plantation is sandy loam and in open land is clay loam. The highest bulk density is in open land (1,51 g/cm3), palm oil plantation (1,29 g/cm3), secondary forest (1,21 g/cm3) and primary forest (0,4 g/cm3). The highest porosity is in primary forest (84,82%), followed by secondary forest (54,48%), palm oil plantation (51,44%) and open land (43,14%). N-available, K-available and soil pH among all land covers are categorized very low. C-organic in primary forest (1,475) and palm oil plantation (1,38%) are categorized low, meanwhile secondary forest (0,67%) and open land (0,34%) are categorized very low. P-available in primary forest (5,33 ppm) and secondary forest (5,2 ppm) are categorized low, while palm oil plantation (8,67 ppm) are categorized medium and open land (10,9 ppm) are categorized high. The highest soil macro fauna abundance are in secondary forest (4.486,4 individual/m2), followed by palm oil plantation (1,158,4 individual/m2), primary forest (361,6 individual/m2) and none in open land (0 individual/m2). Primary forest has the highest soil quality index (0,48), followed by secondary forest (0,28), palm oil plantation (0,25) and open land (0,18). text
