Summary: | <p align="justify">Fault's ability to perform as a seal for hydrocarbon accumulation and secondary migration pathway has been known for a long time. Sealing mechanism at the fault plane is not only affected by the juxtaposition of rock units with different properties but also by the rock properties at the fault zone. Faulting caused grained material to undergo cataclasis which then control the permeability reduction at the fault zone. The faulting process at the sandstone-claystone sequence could produce continuous and layered clay gouge along the fault slip plane. Clay gouge has been experimentally proven to function as a seal for water. However the determining factor whether the fault would function as a seal or migration pathway is also highly affected by the on going in situ stress. <br />
Fault Seal Analysis which is controlled by SGR in study area concluded that SGR in Lower Air Benakat Formation showed the least SGR value in good to good reservoir <br />
juxtaposition. Stress analisis indicates that the research area is situated at strike slip regime. Based on Slip Tendency (Ts), Dilation Tendency (Td), and Fracture Stability (Fs), faults which relatively stike to NE - SW are most sensitive to the Shmax orientation. Faults which strikes relatively to NW – SE is believed to have a high potential sealing capacity.<p align="justify"> |
