SAKA PADA BANGUNAN PENDOPO DI JAWA DART KERATON-VERNAKULAR (STUDI KOMPARASI ESTETIK ANTARA YOGYAKARTA DAN CIREBON)

This main aim of this research is to know further the role and the position of the saka in the pendopo building in Java, and also to learn the estetical aspect covering placement, material, posture and decorative role of saka. Saka is very important part in the Javanese traditional architecture which is the strength of the structure and represent simbolic proud as well. The roof of the pendopo building is supported by saka, and the saka itself show how to hold the head of human being simbolically. According to Koentjaraningrat, Java area etnographically can be divided into subarea, for example: Negarigung, Banyumas, Bagelen, Pesisir Kilen, Pesisir Wetan, Mancanegari, and Tanah Sabrang Wetan. Yogyakarta area belong to Negarigung area, whereas Cirebon area belong to Pesisir Kilen. These two area geographically separated reasonable distance affecting differences, however historically there remain some ties which also influence the culture as well. Yogyakarta and Cirebon both have similarities and differences in their culture also in the case of saka in each of the pendopo building. This research mainly is comparative study about the saka utilized form time to time in Yogyakarta and Cirebon, not only saka utilized in the palace but also saka utilized in formal and regional building.The result show that cosmological view of Javanese society had very significant influence in the estetical built of saka, covering placement, material, posture and decorative role of saka. Another factor influencing saka is geographical difference between Yogyakarta and Cirebon and as conquence affecting differences in the cultural development. Yogyakarta lies on the southcoast which has no access to outside world. Therefore the cultural growth is focused mainly to Sultan palace culture (keraton culture). On the other hand Cirebon lies on the northcoast which comercially and internationally very accessible. Therefore quite number and various outside cultures were adapted and blended to local culture
