Description
Summary:
Improvement and retrofitting of a structural element is required due to the changes of code and deterioration of the structure. Many conventional methods of strengthening include concrete jacketing, steel jacketing, steel plate bonding and external prestressing. The latest method has been popular the using of confinement with externally bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) that is more effective and efficient than previous conventional methods . This thesis discusses behavior of retrofit analysis by using CFRP on large square section such as pier and comparing the result with concrete jacketing method by P-M interaction diagram curve approach. The result obtained is the used of CFRP on the pier is not effective with the increment of the axial capacity is only 1,86% and there is no significant increment in moment. This phenomenon occurs because of the area of restraints (Ae) produced by CFRP is not uniform on the square cross section so that the lateral confining pressure generated is useless.
