Summary:The persisting problem of bending defect on the transmission shaft of the Perkasa bus manufactured by PT Texmaco Subang is shown by the changes of the run out following the carburizing process. The bending defect could lead to fatigue failure that lowered the shaft life time. The research was carried out to have a more understanding on the general shaft production processes especially the heat treatment process to harden the surface and to reduce the bending defect problem after carburizing by observing the heat treatment sequences. The test on the shaft includes spectrometry, metallography, hardness and the measurement of the run out. The heat treatment applied was gas carburizing surface hardening and followed by direct quenching and tempering. The process parameters ir this research were refered to the previous research carried out by J. Grosch and Schneider of ZF-Transmission Industries Germany in 1995. In which the austenizing temperature was carried out for 6 hours at 925 ° C and tempered for two hours at 160 ° C. The improvement of the heat treatment process was obtained by fixing the shaf position by utilizing a wire retainer and changing the use oil with the fresh one. The 20 - 80 pm run out was obtained after heat treatment and followed by a straightening process The values obtained lies in the run out permitted range which is smaller than 90µm. Thi: shown by the lowering of the run out was caused before conducted by repair of process the values of run out is 200 - 800 pm
