In particular, the self focusing effect of NLO material has been examined on the basis of its Intensity Dependent Refractive Index (IDRI) effect in connection with the application of this effect for the characterization of third order NLO property <sub>(x(3))</sub> by Z-scan method. In order to complete the characterization of <sub>(x(3))</sub> with its imaginary part, we have also studied the absorption effect which is dominated by the Two Photon Absorption (WA) process. As a part of this study, we have set up the Z-scan experiment and carried out the measurement on toluene as a sample. The result obtained is n<sub>2</sub> = 3,4 10<sup>-14</sup> cm<sup>2</sup>/W based on the assumption of perfect Gaussian beam profile, and n<sub>2</sub> = 2,6 10<sup>-15</sup> cm<sup>2</sup>/W when a top hat beam profile was assumed. text |
