The coal bearing formation in this field is Toraja Formation. The research is focused to understand the rank, type, quality, potential, depositional environment, and resource of the coal deposit. The analysis conducted in this research consist of organic petrographic such as vitrinite reflectance and maceral composition analysis, while geochemistry analysis was proximate analysis. The research area is divided into four prospect blocks, which are Bonehau Utara, Tamalea Atas, Tamalea Bawah, and Taruya. Based on organic petrographic analysis and geochemistry analysis, coal in the research area is ranked from subbituminous B up to bituminous high volatile A, type of medium vitrinite up to high vitrinite coal. Coal in the research area consists of 2.2-22.4% mineral matter, very low to high ash content, and low to high sulphur content. Based on Tissue Preservation Index (TPI) and Gellification Index (GI) analysis, coal in the Bonehau Utara and Tamalea Atas Blocks were deposited in limnotelmatic zone with indication of lower delta plain. Coal in Tamalea Bawah is deposited in wet forest swamp and limnotelmatic zone with indication of upper to lower delta plain. Coal in the Taruya is deposited in wet forest swamp with indication of upper delta plain. The estimation of hypothetic resource in the research area is 5,599,228.4 tons. The potential of coal in the research area is used for fuel on power plants, but coal in Bonehau Utara, Tamalea Atas, and Tamalea Bawah Block need to conduct desulphurization due to the high sulphur. text
