PERKEMBANGAN DESAIN GERABAH DESA JIPANG DALAM KONTEKS PERUBAHAN SOSIAL BUDAYA MASYARAKATNYA

The tradition ofpottery-making has been taking place fora long period until now, but the pottery design development went on slowly because of some unhelpful internal and external factors. Those internal and external factors were being part of community social and cultural aspects which transformed gradually from time to time. This research was done at Jipang Village in Kabupaten Gowa, South Sulawesi because of the lack of references about pottery from this location, moreover to identify the sequence of design transformation diacronically in the community and to preserve local values at Jipang Village. The research method used here was qualitative method of analysis sincronic with diacronic. The research approaches used were aesthetic and socio-cultural approaches. The data in this research were collected by observation, interviews, data recordings, and literature studies. The result of this research can be described as follows : Socio-cultural aspects such as demography, geographical location, condition of the nature, technology system, economy, social class system, genealogy system, gender-based system of work educational environment, and value system were related and influenced the pottery design. The production process of the pottery emerged as a respond from the community adaptation with their socio-cultural environment. Raw material availability and pottery-making skill given from generation to generation were being basic resources to accomplish the community's need for their life. Therefore social transformation happened in the community would implicate pottery design development. Traditional pottery pattern (1960-1980) were still limited because the production only emphasize pottery dominant function aas kitchen utensils. It happened because their demand was still very simple at that time. Transitional pottery pattern (1980-1990) has developed its function and produced things like chairs and jugs. It happened because of the pottery-maker's will to copy others and commercial demand Modern pottery pattern (1990-2003) had evolved in its shape, function, and ornaments. It happened because of socio-cultural demand which became more complex and because of external influences such as craftmen training by the government or school institution. Nevertheless in reality, a large amount of traditional pottery were being produced to fulfill certain market, whereas modern pottery were having difficulties in marketing, hence there should be alternative effort to develop the design of modern pottery
