Description
Summary:
The research area is located at Louise-Nonny Field, Kutai Basin. This research investigates the possible influence of clay minerals diagenesis to the generating overpressure using analysis of X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) / Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX). XRD is used to quantify the amount of clay minerals. SEM/EDX are used to further investigate mineral morphology and chemical composition.

The generating mechanism of overpressure in the research area is combination of disequilibrium compaction and unloading. Disequilibrium compaction can be analyzed by rate of sedimentation and decrease of density value below top of overpressure showing undercompaction condition. Unloading can be analyzed based on the density and sonic plot, and reversal pattern of sonic and resistivity data below top of overpressure. Overpressure estimation performed by using Eaton’s Method with the exponent of 3 gives quite good result.

Based on the XRD and SEM/EDX analysis, illitization does not affect overpressure generation in the research area. XRD analysis result in form of plot of clay mineral composition versus depth shows relatively constant percentage of illite below top of overpressure. SEM analysis result indicates that the dominant illite is authigenic illite, coating detrital quartz grains, not the result of smectite transformation.
