STUDY OF DESIGN AND FUNCTION EXTERIOR IDENTIFICATION SIGNAGE AT BANDUNG CITY

City as a center and a place of activity creates unbearable crowd. All of that becomes <br /> <br /> a challenge, how people finding themselves in a space or building that are unfamiliar <br /> <br /> to them. Therefore, the need for information that appears in the form of a system <br /> <br /> called signage. In recent years, there has been a trend in the public space of the <br /> <br /> Bandung City that raised information content as an identity as an exterior <br /> <br /> identification. The signage is designed quite unique because it has a very large size <br /> <br /> with contrasting colors. This is done as a part of placemaking or not decorative in a <br /> <br /> room. In a short time, the application of the design concept grew more and more and <br /> <br /> seems to be forced to be a standard in the information system not only in public <br /> <br /> spaces but also in public buildings in Bandung City. The problem that occur is lack of <br /> <br /> consideration on function and design of the exterior identification signage. <br /> <br /> The problem in this study is how the application of exterior identification signage <br /> <br /> design concept in public spaces and public buildings in Bandung City. Then, how <br /> <br /> design considerations on the function in the exterior identification signage design in <br /> <br /> public spaces and public buildings in Bandung City. Furthermore, how the people’s <br /> <br /> insight regarding the application of exterior identification signage design in public <br /> <br /> spaces and public buildings in Bandung City recently. The object of this study consist <br /> <br /> of ten categories, which are divided into five categories of public space and five <br /> <br /> categories of public buildings. The borders of the study objects is on exterior <br /> <br /> identification signage design that is related to government agency. The method of this <br /> <br /> study is using mix method by qualitative data collection technique by observation, <br /> <br /> open interview, and literature study. Qualitative data is taken by structured interview <br /> <br /> in the form of questionnaire. <br /> <br /> To find out how the application of exterior identification signage design is reviewed <br /> <br /> by the information, graphic, and hardware, then the results of the design study are <br /> <br /> adjusted to the criteria of a good signage function that is noticeable, readable, and <br /> <br /> informative. The analysis on this study is strengthen by the insight of resource <br /> <br /> persons in the field of urban architecture and graphic design. Afterwards, the findings <br /> <br /> on the analysis is compared with the people’s insight in Bandung City regarding these <br /> <br /> study problems. <br /> <br /> From the study that has been conducted, it is found that the exterior identification <br /> <br /> signage design in both public space and public buildings use the same signage design <br /> <br /> concept. The similarity of design concept is graphic and hardware. Moreover, the <br /> <br /> exterior identification signage in both places is less concerned with the function <br /> <br /> aspect. Most of the exterior identification signage design that do not consider the <br /> <br /> function aspect is on public buildings. The analysis results on the three criteria of <br /> <br /> signage function to be found that the public buildings in Bandung City is less <br /> <br /> noticeable and readable than exterior identification signage design in public spaces. <br /> <br /> It is different with the people’s insight of Bandung City. The application of exterior <br /> <br /> identification signage design in both public spaces and buildings is considered as an <br /> <br /> quite interesting object and appropriate in design and its function as identity marker. <br /> <br /> From above explanation, it is showed that although the analysis result shows that <br /> <br /> most of the exterior identification signage design in both public spaces and buildings <br /> <br /> in Bandung City is do not consider design and function aspects, but the public still <br /> <br /> consider that the exterior identification signage design as new attractive media.
