Summary:Banana tree is one of tropical plants widely cultivated in Indonesia. All of the parts of banana tree are well <br /> <br /> utilized the fruit as a source of food and the leaves as a wrapper. On some region banana leaves also used <br /> <br /> as wounds bandage. However, there is no scientific prove that banana leaves have antibacterial or <br /> <br /> antifungal activity that can prevent infection in the wound. In this research the ethanol extract from <br /> <br /> banana leaves were tested its antimicrobial activity to two Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and <br /> <br /> Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and two Gram positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis). <br /> <br /> The antifungal activity of the extract was carried out against two pathogenic fungi (Aspergillus niger and <br /> <br /> Candida albicans). Tetracycline HCl and ketoconazole are used as standard for antibacterial test and <br /> <br /> antifungal test. The antimicrobial activity is determined by agar diffusion, microdilution and TLCbioautography. Ethanol extract of banana leaves contain of flavonoid, fenol, and tannin. Ethanol extract <br /> <br /> of banana leaves had MIC values against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus <br /> <br /> aureus by 12.5 mg / mL, 6.25 mg / mL, and 12.5 mg / mL, respectively. While Aspergillus niger, Candida <br /> <br /> albicans, and Bacillus subtilis had MIC values> 50 mg / mL. The MBC value of the ethanol extract of banana <br /> <br /> leaves for Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was 25 mg / mL. The results of bioautography <br /> <br /> showed that flavonoid which had a Rf value of 0.6 and 0.48 were able to inhibit the growth of Gram <br /> <br /> negative bacteria Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. <br />
