CHARACTERIZATION OF ACID MINE DRAINAGE FORMATION USING NET TOTAL ACID PRODUCTION POTENTIAL (NTAPP) METHOD FOR ROCK SAMPLES OF PT KLM

Coal mining can cause some negative impacts to the environment, one of which is acid mine drainage. The initial step to prevent the formation of acid mine drainage is to characterize the geochemical properties of the rocks and predict the quality of drainage water. Geochemical characterization tests...

Geochemical characterization tests which are commonly used are static tests (Acid Base Accounting-ABA and Net Acid Generation-NAG). Geochemical characterization was carried out starting with mineralogical analysis and elemental content of rock samples, and then doing the geochemical characterization test with NTAPP method. This NTAPP test is static which does not consider the oxidation rate of the rock so the results from this test can be compared with the results of static test (ABA and NAG), which then results from the both tests compared with the results of kinetic tests using Free Draining Column Leach Test.

Based on this research, the result of rock characterization by NTAPP method do not give a significant difference from the characterization results based on static tests, the results of this characterization are also consistent with the kinetic test results. For PAF material, the net acidity from NTAPP test tends to be smaller than the static-NAPP test results because the total acidity in NTAPP test is influenced by Chromium Reducible Sulfur-SCr percentage and Titratable Actual Acidity-TAA, while in static tests the maximum potential acidity is affected by the Total Sulfur percentage which consider overall sulfur in the rocks. For material with NAF properties, the net acidity value from NTAPP test almost the same with the static test results.
text
