THE HEAVY METALS CONTAMINATION PROFILE IN WATER AND SEDIMENT OF CIKERUH RIVER

Summary: | Cikeruh River is a tributary of upstream area of Citarum River. The purpose of this research was to evaluate heavy metals concentration (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn) in water and sediment of Cikeruh River and to create its heavy metal contamination profile. Water and sediment samples were collected from ten different sampling sites, which were located from the upstream to the downstream of Cikeruh River. The heavy metals concentrations of the samples were determined using Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrophotometry (ICP-MS) <br />
method. The result of the analysis showed that heavy metal concentration was detected in sediment samples with each heavy metal concentration as follows Cd <br />
4.085-6.318 ppm, Cr 39.997-67.480 ppm, Cu 25.531-86.027 ppm, Mn 917.627-1900.122 ppm, Pb 2.801-18.326 ppm, and Zn 10.738-140.811 ppm. Heavy metals concentrations of water samples were as follows Cd 0.00035-0.00115 mg/L, Cr 0.001-0.019 mg/L, Cu 0.009-0.031 mg/L, Mn 0.100-0.421 mg/L, Pb 0.014-0.020 mg/L, and Zn 0.015-0.120 mg/L. Heavy metals with the highest concentration was manganese in sediment and water. There was no correlation between the concentration of heavy metal in the water and sediment. The heavy metals concentration found in water and sediment of Cikeruh River was related to activities from industries, settlements, and agriculture located around the sampling sites location. |
