TOPOGRAPHIC EFFECTS ON INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL WAVE IN TWO-LAYER FLUIDS

The most common fluid motion for us is the wave on the surface. But in a lake or ocean body, there is an internal motion within a water body. The appearance of internal wave motion is captured from satellite images as stripes of rough surfaces. The difference in salinity, water temperature, and pres...

The difference in salinity, water temperature, and pressure, water column in the ocean is stratified in layers of fluid with different densities. The lighter fluid lies above the denser fluid. Interfacial waves are waves that appear at the interface of these two layers of fluid with different density. Here, the two-layer shallow water equation over various topography is considered to examine the phenomenon of internal waves above a certain topography that affects surface waves. Further, from the equation, we can get the eigen value of the system of equations that can give us in- formation about the baroclinic and batotropic phenomenon. Next, we solve the equation analytically to obtain wave reflection and transmission coefficient. Those coefficients depend on the width and height of the topography. We implement the staggered finite volume method to the two-layer model to simulate external and internal waves propagate over various topography. We calculate the transmission wave and compare the numerical result with the analytical solution. text
