Summary: | Sulfonated alkyl ester is one of sulfonate-based surfactants that can be applied in the enhanced oil recovery (EOR)

processes. However, in certain types of oil, the sulfonated alkyl ester has not shown its optimum performance yet,

therefore the addition of other compounds is needed, such as the addition of co-surfactants. In this study, 2-((2-

(dodecylamino)ethyl)amino)ethanol t has been successfully synthesized from the reaction between 1-

bromododecane with 2-((2-(amino)ethyl)amino)ethanol by utilizing MAOS (Microwave Assisted Organic Synthesis)

method to be used as co-surfactan. The structure of 2-((2-(dodecylamino)ethyl)amino)ethanol has been

characterized using FTIR and NMR. A typical FTIR spectrum of the 2-((2-(dodecylamino)ethyl)amino)ethanol

surfactant featured bands at wavenumbers of 3277.06 cm-1 (O–H, alcohol and N-H, amine), 1462.04 cm-1 (C-O),

and 1128.36 cm-1 (C-N). The 1H NMR spectrum showed the chemical shift values for a singlet proton signal at 3.65

ppm, which indicates the proton of -OH functional group; while the proton of amine groups are showed at 2.90

ppm. The 13C NMR spectrum showed 16 high intensity signals corresponded to 16 carbon atoms in the synthesized

compound. A carbon signal that appeared in 60.90 ppm indicates the carbon atom next to -OH group. The

compatibility tests of the formulated surfactant, 2-((2-(amino)ethyl)amino)ethanol and sulfonated alkyl ester, have

been carried out, Which consisted of the solution stability tests, interfacial tension tests, and phase behavior tests.

The compatibility test results showed an optimum condition of 2-((2-(amino)ethyl)amino)ethanol solution at

concentration of 1.00 %wt which resulted an IFT value of 1.58.10-2 dyne/cm. The optimum concentration of the

formulated solution between 2-((2-(amino)ethyl)amino)ethanol and the sulfonated alkyl ester is at concentration

of 1.00 %wt which produced the interfacial tension of 9.05 x 10-3 dyne/cm. These results indicated that 2-((2-

(dodecylamino)ethyl)amino)ethanol can be used as a co-surfactant to be combined with sulfonated alkyl ester and

has the capability to improve the performance of sulfonated alkyl ester surfactant in the enhanced oil recovery

application. |
