Summary:HDPE plastic waste can be used for modifying asphalt for the highway manufacture in Indonesia and addition polymer such as HPDE plastic for modifying bitumen will increase the asphalts performance. The objective of this research was to know the potential and ability of HDPE waste utilization as substitution material for asphalt in Asphalt Concrete Wearing Course (AC-WC) layer with 3 substitution variation, 0.1%; 0.3% and 0.5% by mass. HDPE waste plastic was mixed with asphalt using wet method and needing time of heating process during 50 minutes. The addition of HDPE plastic waste would affect the <br /> <br /> asphalt properties in parameters of penetrastion, softening point, flash point, specific gravity and viscosity. Optimum Bitumen Content (OBC) value of AC-WC <br /> <br /> test specimen for 60/70 bitumen was 5,82%, even though for asphalt substitution HDPE plastic waste 0.1%; 0.3% and 0.5% successively were 5.6%; 5.48% and 5.45%. In this research, the best variation substituion of HDPE waste plastic was 0,5% by asphalt mass which have the lowest of asphalt needed and the highest value of Remaining Strength Index. Aside from the technical advantage, the utilization of HDPE plastic waste was also favorable in terms of environmental aspect. HDPE plastic waste recycling will reduce the plastic waste generated in landfill and economic benefits from saving cost of asphalt procurement was 68%. however, 0.5% HDPE waste usage in asphalt mixture will require wnwegy consumption of 2.42 kW/1,500 gramsof mixture and 0.475 kW/1,200 grams specipen AC-WC. And HDPE substitution asphalt mixture resulted air pollution <br /> <br /> from CO emmisions that produced by heating asphlat.
