Description
Summary:In the coming years, business to consumer (B2C) e-commerce has been booming marked by online population growth and consumers’ shopping patterns changes. Frost and Sullivan in 2012 predicted by 2025, more than 60% of the population globally will live in cities and nearly 20% of retail within cities will be organized via online channels. Urban logistics has a pivotal role in e-commerce, instead of creating an effective flow of goods in effective and efficient manner, urban logistics’ objectives should be added with non-commercial considerations such as their impact on air pollution, traffic congestion, and the convenience of non-logistic activities occurring within the city.

Nowadays, another arising issue, there are numerous delivery vendors (couriers) provide services for delivering e-commerce products in the urban areas. Yet, they rarely consider the impact of their activities for other sectors such as triggering worse traffic congestion or contributing in air pollution increase. Without consolidation and coordination, the inefficiency would occur for all deliveries and made worse by multiple delivery vendors, wasting logistics resources such as vehicle idle time, workforce cost, elevator usage and parking lots. Thus, one of the platforms in structuring the urban logistics is a collaborative urban logistics by establishing consolidation center.

This research aims at developing site selection method for consolidation centers to improve urban logistics performance, especially the last-mile deliveries so that it will be more effective and efficient. It will exploit Jakarta Metropolitan Area as a study case. The sustainability of urban logistics system is getting more essential for rapidly growing cities in the world, such as Jakarta. A well-managed urban logistics can assist to achieve economic development while preserving the environment in urban areas. This effort will alleviate the burden of road infrastructure, as well as improving the quality of the environment and life in the city.

Keywords: e-commerce, parcel delivery, traffic congestion, urban logistics, consolidation center, sustainable logistics system
