Summary: | Preservation of heritage sites born from their historical significance as well as from knowledge, educational, religious, and/or cultural standpoint. These preservation efforts have been a top priority in many countries and cities, and the establishment of Heritage City has been proven to be one way in promoting cultural preservation in urban areas. Bandung stands as one of the few cities in Indonesia that has various and diverse heritage buildings, most popularly of its abundance of Art Deco-style architectures, heavily influenced by European architecture during the colonial period. Yet as one of the large cities in the country, preservation of heritage buildings is threatened by modern development and urbanization. Without clear guidelines as to manage them, heritage sites and buildings will be vulnerable to change or, even worse, fade away.
This study assesses the feasibility of Bandung being a Heritage City from objective and subjective views. Objective assessment is carried out by comparing the conditions of cultural heritage sites in Bandung to Heritage City criteria: the presence of cultural heritage sites which is supported by management system of heritage buildings and sites. Subjective assessment, on the other hand, is achieved through perception of Bandung citizens on their familiarities with heritage buildings and sites in Bandung. This research reveals that Bandung satisfies to become a Heritage City because it meets 7 out of 8 indicators of a Heritage City. Moreover, 89% of respondents and 88.2% of tourists state that they recognize heritage buildings and sites in Bandung. With this in mind it is concluded that managing Bandung as a Heritage City should encompass these strategies: (1) meet the remaining management criteria; (2) perform periodic evaluations on criteria that have been met (whether it needs improvement or not); (3) conserve existing heritage sites and buildings; (4) maximizing the potential of those buildings and sites for the public. |
