Summary: | Industrial development in Indonesia may adversely affect such environmental
pollution. Among the various industries, electroplating industry has an important
role because it produces small volumes of waste but highly toxic for environment
due to the presence of heavy metal such as Cr (VI) and Cu (II). Biosorption can
be the best alternative technologies in the heavy metal adsorption. Mahogany
(Swietenia mahagoni) is widely available in Indonesia and thrives in Java.
Mahogany has been used for many purposes but mahogany fruit shell is
unemployed. One of method to increase the economic value of mahogany fruit
shell is structured as biosorbent to remove metal ion. Biosorbent used in this
study consists of three types of process: biosorbent without treatment (BWT),
biosorbent treatment condensation polymerization (BTCP), and biosorbent
treatment immobilization with silica gel (BTSG). Size of the biosorbent,
biosorbent dose, contact time, and initial concentration are known to have effect
on heavy metals absorption efficiency. Type of biosorbent with the best
performance for real industrial apllication in sequence is BTSG, BTCP, and BWT
with adsorption efficiency respectively 94%, 92%, and 46%. For industrial
applications biosorben types of BWT is considered the most economically viable. |
