INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/32069 This apartment project is based on the emerging problems in the business district in the sub-district of Sumur Bandung in Bandung city, especially the aspect of thermal environment. The slums in this business district have a very low living quality, marked by the increasing of air temperature and the high level of air pollution. This condition is caused by the large amount of illegal construction and rule infringements. Development intervention is need with the form of apartment design that is possible for creating a better thermal environment. The unarranged housing causes hot air to be trapped between buildings. The small gaps between buildings blocks airflow to move between them. This condition eventually will lower the quality of life in general. The concept of mass arrangements in this apartment design is a north-south oriented mass and another mass of west-east orientation. This arrangements is meant to prevent the effect of wind tunnel or the absence of wind. The mass perpendicular to the direction of the wind is designed with wind holes to channel the obstructed wind. Openings and ventilations area placed at the entrance and balcony door to create cross-ventilation. The material used in the design is concrete because of its high albedo, low heat capacity, and low heat emission characteristic. White color is applied to the facade to increase its solar radiation reflectance. text
