Summary:Ionizing radiation is currently widely used for diagnostic purposes, therapeutics, and non-surgical interventions. The use of low doses in normal conditions can cause adverse health effects in the long term due to radiation exposure, not only acceptable to patient but also doctors, radiographers and nurses. One way of monitoring radiation doses to worker is using leukocytes count and absolute lymphocytes count because it is radiosensitive. This study was a cross sectional epidemiological study. Exposed group in the study were 46 subjects from radiology, radiotherapy, and interventional cardiology in a hospital with 26 subjects as control group. Statistical analysis showed no significant difference in the average cumulative dose among the three groups of radiation workers (p > 0.05). Leukocytes and absolute lymphocytes count in the radiation workers blood are still in the normal range. There was a decrement in leukocytes and absolute lymphocytes count of radiation workers compared to control group. The sequence of radiation workers who have leukocytes and lymphocytes from the lowest to the highest respectively interventional cardiology; radiotherapy; radiology. The average of leukocytes in interventional cardiology workers is 7097 ± 1976/?L , while lymphocytes 2418 ± 275/?L. However, statistical analysis results showed no significant difference in the average of leukocytes and lymphocytes among the three groups of radiation workers and control group (p > 0,05). Chronic radiation exposure of workers receiving low dose rate for long periods of time is considered to lead adaptive mechanisms in hemopoiesis system. Dose-response curves showed a tendency of decrement in leukocytes and absolute lymphocytes with increasing cumulative doses received by workers. Relationship of leukocytes with cumulative low doses (<100 mSv) show a strong relationship compared with absolute lymphocytes. Heterogeneity of radiation exposure and the response of different individuals to ionizing radiation affects it.
