Summary: | In oil and gas industry, there are some varieties of industrial equipment made out of metal that very prone to the dangers of corrosion. One of the example is pipeline used to drain crude oil. Internal corrosions in pipe often occurs due to the presence of carbon dioxide (CO2), Cl- ions, and hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) that are dissolved in the fluid. One way to slow the rate of corrosion is to add the inhibitor to the carbon steel metal. Inhibitors used in this experiment are sodium salt 2-mercaptobenzotiazol and cysteine. The test being done in this study is the inhibition potential test on both inhibitors in 1% NaCl solution at a temperature of 30, 45, and 60 ° C with cysteine concentration variations of 25, 50, 75, 100, and 125 ppm, as well as sodium salt 2-mercaptobenzotiazol with concentration variations of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 ppm. Corrosion rate measurements were calculated using the Weight Loss (weight reduction), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Tafel extrapolation method. Results of this study indicate that both inhibitors provide inhibition to the corrosion of carbon steel and act as an anodic inhibitor. The maximum inhibition efficiency of cysteine inhibitor reached 66.72% at a temperature of 30 ?C, 68.19% at 45 ?C, and 43.34% at 60 ?C. With the addition of 25 ppm sodium salt 2-mercaptobenzotiazol, cysteine inhibition efficiency increased to 87.41% at a temperature of 60 ?C. Cysteine has a low inhibitory power against carbon steel at higher temperatures but the addition of sodium salt 2-merkaptobenzotiazol can improve the inhibition potential of cysteine to inhibit the corrosion rate of carbon steel. |
