Summary: | Magnesium hidride, MgH2 is known to be the most promising hydrogen storage material due to its big theoretical hydrogen content (7.6 mass%). Thermal study of various MgH2 – Activated Carbon – Nb2O5 has been done. Mixtures of MgH2 – Activated Carbon – Nb2O5 was prepared with ball milling process for 2 hours at 300 rpm in atmospheric condition with ball to mass ratio 40:1. The mixtures were analyzed using X-Ray Diffraction to identified the changing in its phase, and cristalinity. Thermogravimetry – Differential Scanning Calorimetry (TG-DSC) was used to determine the thermal characteristic like decomposition of materials, desorption temperature, and the temperature of the changing phase. The addition of 0.5 mol% Nb2O5 to MgH2 can decrease the desorption temperature about 79 oC compared to MgH2 desorption temperature (466 oC). The addition of 2 mol% activated carbon can decrease the desorption temperature about 66oC. Combination of MgH2 – Activated Carbon – Nb2O5 with composition (mol%) 97.5 : 2 : 0.5 and 96 : 3.5 : 0.5 show the desorption temperature at 399 oC and 413 oC. The activation energy for both mixtures, based on Kissinger’s Plot, are 131 kJ/mol ang 88 kJ/mol, which are lower than MgH2 without any addition (206 kJ/mol). The mixtures of MgH2 – Activated Carbon – Nb2O5 can have hydrogen content up to 4%. |
