SYNTHESIS OF ANIONIC SURFACTANT FROM WASTED COOKING OIL AND THEIR CHARACTERIZATION

The wasted cooking oil can be converted to become a mono functional anionic surfactant through sulfonation. The conversion of the wasted cooking oil to surfactant could be good solution in the used of waste due to the wide applications of surfactant. The wasted cooking oil has an acid number of 0.3...

The conversion of the wasted cooking oil to surfactant could be good solution in the used of waste due to the wide applications of surfactant. The wasted cooking oil has an acid number of 0.3 after it has analyzed by American Oil Chemist Society (AOCS) methods Cd 3a-63. The wasted cooking oil was converted to become a methyl ester compound at 60 ºC for 35 minutes by transesterification with molar ratio of methanol/the wasted cooking oil = 5.42/1 and potassium hydroxide of 0.5% w/w used as catalyst. Sulfonation of the methyl ester was carried out by using acetyl sulfate as a sulfonation agent and dichloromethane as a solvent. The time variations of sulfonation was conducted for 30, 60, and 120 minutes for surfactant containing potassium salt, while the time variation for 30 and 60 minutes for surfactant containing sodium salt. The synthesized surfactant could decrease the interfacial tension between water and n-heptane from 50.6 to 5.6 mN/m and the contact angle between water and polymethyl methacylate (PMMA) from 70.9 to 34 º. text
