Adsorption Study of Ni(II) and Cd(II) Using Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes)Activated Carbon Adsorbent and/or Chicken Egg Shell

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and chicken egg shell have been known as adsorbents, used for adsorption of heavy metals. In this research, performance of four types of adsorbent towards Ni(II) and Cd(II) was compared. The first adsorbent was activated carbon made from water hyacinth combusted...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/32265 Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and chicken egg shell have been known as adsorbents, used for adsorption of heavy metals. In this research, performance of four types of adsorbent towards Ni(II) and Cd(II) was compared. The first adsorbent was activated carbon made from water hyacinth combusted at 400?C for 30 minutes. The second adsorbent was made from chicken egg shell through the calcination process at 900?C for 4 hours. The third adsorbent was made from chicken egg shell without calcination process. The fourth adsorbent was modified adsorbent, made from a 1:1 mixture of chicken egg shell and activated carbon from water hyacinth. Solutions of Ni(II) and Cd(II) were made from NiSO4 and CdSO4 salts. Adsorption experiment was conducted on a set of single solutions of Ni(II) and Cd(II) and either on binary solutions of Ni(II) and Cd(II) having various proportion of both solutions. Determination of Ni(II) and Cd(II) was performed by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Variations of pH was set as natural pH (±6) and acidic pH (pH = 1). The best performance of modified adsorbent was found on natural pH, but chicken egg shell without calcination results in the best performance on acidic pH. text
