AuNPs have been successfully synthesized using the Turkevich method. Previously, HAuCl4 solution was prepared by dissolving gold wire (99.99%) into aqua regia solution. Amount of 0.17 mL of 1% HAuCl4 was added to 200 mL aquabidest then heated until boiling. Then, added amount of 10 mL of sodium citrate, and stirred constantly. The color of solution change after one minute of the addition of sodium citrate, from yellow to gray, purple, and finally to red. The parameters that have been investigated in the synthesis of AuNPs is the effect of temperature, stirring rate, and the mass of sodium citrate to the stability and size of AuNPs are formed. The AuNPs product were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The average diameter of AuNPs is ~ 20-27 nm. The higher temperature and stirring rate, the smaller AuNPs produced. The temperature and stirring rate optimum in order to produce AuNPs that its longer life time is 150 0C and 280 rpm. The next stage is the preparation of optical fiber modification. The parameters studied in the modification of optical fiber, as : the determination of the etching rate, the influence of etching solution (HF, HCl, H2SO4, H2O2 and H2SO4-H2O2) to the etching rate of the optical fiber. The average of etching rate of each etching solution sequentially is: 1.0323 ?m/hours; 0.0856 ?m/hours; 0.2486 ?m/hours; 6.94 x 10-3 ?m/hours, and 0.2624 ?m/hours. The optimum etching time was 72 hours. Mixed etching solution of H2SO4-H2O2 shows a better performance compared with other solutions text
