Summary: | The Spring is a widely used object for a variety of equipment systems. Physics phenomena that occur in spring can be explained by Hooke’s law. Each spring have a spring constant value that indicating the stiffness of the spring. The shape of a spring based on the diameter of a spring may vary, such as a cylindrical spring with a uniform spring diameter and a conical spring, barrel spring, and a hourglass spring with a non-uniform spring diameter. The purpose of this research is to analyze the value of spring constant from spring with a non-uniform spring diameter experimentally with static and dynamic method, and to determine the equation of the spring constant for a spring with a non-uniform spring diameter. 14 pieces of springs are used and each spring have different characteristics with wire diameter 0.8 mm and made from stainless steel. 8 pieces of additional springs are used with the shape of springs arranged in series to support the result obtained from spring with a non-uniform spring diameter. In research, mean value of total spring diameter from each spring are calculated and used to calculated the value of spring constant theoretically, and compared with the result from experiment. From this comparison, the value of spring constant theoretically using mean value of total spring diameter not much different from the value of spring constant from experiment. So that the equation of the spring constant for a spring with a non-uniform spring diameter is obtained by using mean value of total spring diameter in the existing calculation formula. |
