One of the fastest growing consumer products in Indonesia is cosmetic products. One additive that has an important role in cosmetic products is thickener. Thickener can be obtained from materials classified as hydrocolloids such as cellulose, agar, carrageenan, gum, starch, etc. Cellulose can be obtained from forestry products such as pulp which is very abundant. However, most of it is still exported in the form of pulp and domestic use is only to produce paper. Though pulp/cellulose can be processed into derivative products that can be used as thickener. The purpose of the study was to test the performance of cellulose-based thickener which has pseudoplastic properties and good viscosity for cosmetic products. One of the cellulose derivative products that has good characteristics for the thickener of cosmetic ingredients is hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC). HEC is characterized in terms of its solubility at various pH, dissolution temperature, solvent type, and performance as thickener. The thickener application process is carried out by mixing thickener into cosmetic products. Variation of thickener performance test was carried out at 0.5 HEC concentration; 1; 1.5; and 2% w/w cosmetic products. Variations in the types of cosmetic products used are liquid bath soap, shampoo, lotion, facial soap, shower cream, and milk cleanser. The results of the analysis show that the increase in thickener concentration is directly proportional to the increase in viscosity. The more the amount of HEC used, the resulting solution becomes more turbid, so HEC is less suitable for use in clear colored products. The addition of HEC neutralizes the pH of the solution, so HEC is not suitable for products that are sensitive to changes in pH. Adding HEC as much as 0.5% w/w can increase the viscosity of the product sample by ~ 37%. HEC performance as a high thickener for facial wash and medium to low product samples for other product samples. The addition of HEC does not affect the pH of the product samples used except for Pond's Cleansing Milk samples. The stability of HEC during storage is quite good. text |
