Summary:MnIIIsalen complex with acetate anion has been synthesized from Mn(II) acetate and salenH2 in ethanol 95% solution. The solid of [MnIIIsalenOAc] complex is brown visually, but it looks greenish under microscope. The complex is paramagnetic with magnetic moment of 5.3 B.M. MnIIIsalen complex with chloride as anion has been synthesized in the same procedure and produce brownish red solid [MnIIIsalenCl] complex. The complex can also be prepared from [MnIIIsalenOAc] by substitution reaction, replace acetate with chloride anion. This method produces the same product but the yield 20% higher. The performance of this product seems to be more uniform than the previous method. This was observed from SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) image. Both complexes can be used as precursors for polynuclear complexes by substitute the anion with bridging [N(CN)2]- anion. The product has similar color as other two counter ion, and its chemical formula is [MnIIIsalenN(CN)2] which obtained in high yield (>90%). The complex is soluble in methanol and ESI-MS data show the presence of [N(CN)2]- ion in axial position indicated that this complex can form polynuclear complex. In addition, there is a peak at mass of 840 which shows the dimeric complex species with the chemical formula [(MnIII)2(salen)2(N(CN)2)3]-.
