Summary: | Bandung is one of the city that is known by its heritage building. Also known as Paris van Java,
Bandung is famous for its natural beauty and architecture. One of the beautiful heritage building
witnessing the development of Bandung is Panti Karya Building. Panti Karya Lifestyle Center project is
located on Merdeka Street 39, Bandung. This is a fictitious commercial building project. The owner is
Istana Group. The lifestyle center is located on a 5000m2 land. As it is named, Panti Karya Lifestyle
Center provides the modern society lifestyle, such as shopping (retails), dining (cafe/restaurants),
and entertainment (auditorium). It consists of three buildings. One of the advantages of this lifestyle
center is its strategic location. Being in between Merdeka Street (that has Bandung Indah Plaza and
Gramedia Bookstore) and Purnawarman Street with its Bandung Electronic Center, the site is the
potential of increased economic activity.
One of the interesting issues on site is the existence of Panti Karya Building. It is classified as Type
B Heritage Building in Bandung. The building has been abandoned and used only as motorcycle
parking area on its ground floor. New buildings that will be designed nearby must be compatible and
visually appropriate in scale with the old one, but still attractive and having their own identity. The
approach used for this project is contextual juxtaposition, where new buildings have different
designs than Panti Karya to create contrasts but also having a good visual harmony with the
neighborhood (specially to the heritage building). Through this approach, it is expected for the new
buildings to strengthen the visual character of the old Panti Karya Building that used to be known as
one of the first movie theaters in Bandung in 1970s. |
