REDUCTION OF SORBITOL TO LIQUID HYDROCARBON WITH HYDRIODIC ACID AND FORMIC ACID

Polyols such as sorbitol can be produced from hydrolysis and hydrogenation of biomass, and glycerol from byproducts of biodiesel production. This sugar alcohol is a compound which can be converted to liquid fuel by reducing reaction with iodide acid and certain reducing agents into iodoalkanes and...

This sugar alcohol is a compound which can be converted to liquid fuel by reducing reaction with iodide acid and certain reducing agents into iodoalkanes and then eliminating the reaction into hydrocarbons. The reaction system using the acid reducing agent of the format was studied in this study, with sorbitol sugar alcohol and glycerol as the main raw material. The effect of operating conditions is the ratio of HI/sugar alcohol, the ratio of formic acid/sugar alcohol and the reaction time to the factor variable in this study, then the response variable observed are conversion of sugar alcohol and iodoalkane yield. The results showed that the reduction of sorbitol with HI and formic acid resulted the greatest conversion at 81.77% and the largest iodohexane yield at 44.92%. In the glycerol reduction yield the largest conversion at 86.05% and the largest yield of iodopropane at 79.19%. The iodoalkane yield and sugar alcohol conversion are most influenced by the acid/alcoholic acid ratio, whereas the iodoalkane selectivity is most affected by the HI/sugar alcohol ratio. Based on GCMS analysis, iodohexane elimination reaction to hydrocarbon resulted in the distribution of hydrocarbon products within range C6-C18 with C10 as main hydrocarbon product. text
