TOURISM AND DWELLING TRANSFORMATION AROUND PANTAI KARTINI JEPARA REGENCY

This thesis aims to observe the effect of tourism towards the dwelling transformation around Pantai Kartini. Pantai Kartini is a regional-scale natural tourism destination in Jepara Regency, Central Java Province. Over the last five years, Pantai Kartini has experienced a fairly rapid development of tourism activities in line with the increase in the number of tourists who come each year. The development of tourism activities in Pantai Kartini has given the business opportunities for the surrounding population. In the effort to respond to business opportunities, residents have conducted some changes to their house and led to the emergence of the phenomenon of dwelling transformation around Pantai Kartini. This study chooses the dwellings which are adjacent to Pantai Kartini tourist area and the dwellings are located slightly away from Pantai Kartini tourist area to study this phenomenon. The study shows that the development of tourism activities in Kartini Beach has triggered the emergence of the phenomenon of transformation in dwellings which is adjacent to Kartini Beach tourist area. The dwelling transformation, among others, changes in dwelling function into tourist facilities, dwelling typology changes, dwelling material which become more permanent, and the change of vernacular architecture style into modern architecture. This dwelling transformation is supported by the connectivity and ease of access between the residential area and tourist area. Various tourism development efforts need to be developed again by the government to spur the residents around the tourists areas to participate in tourism activities, especially low income communities.
