Description
Summary:To understand the phenomenon of place attachment towards a specific place, considerations on people’s perspectives involving historical, cultural and geographical aspects are needed, in order to disclose the influences of local characteristics in the process of place attachment formation. This study was conducted to understand the concept of place attachment of peoples of Tana Luwu towards historical sites of Islamic period of Kedatuan Luwu in South Sulawesi, and the predictors that influence it. This research study was conducted using quantitative method, applying statistical analysis techniques, i.e coincidence analysis and level of significance test. The research framework was developed in reference to model of tripartite dimension of place attachment from Scannel and Gifford (2010), consisted of place-personprocess dimensions. The data were collected by distributing questionnaires to 303 respondents who were selected purposively. From the research findings, it can be concluded that the place attachment of peoples of Tana Luwu towards historical sites of Islamic period of Kedatuan Luwu is more related to affective aspects or positive emotional feeling rather than cognitive and behavioural aspects. The characteristics of peoples that significantly related to place attachment are family tree and belief system. Meanwhile, the characteristics of sites that most significantly related to place attachment is the meaning of place conceived by local peoples. This research study provides an insight on the strategies that can be applied to keep the sustainability of historical sites, by providing historical and cultural knowledges concerning the historical sites to the young generations, within the family and formal education environment.
