THE EFFECT OF EXTERNAL RESISTANCE ON MICROBIAL FUEL CELL SYSTEM

Energy and environmental problems are two main issues that widely discussed in recent years. Much effort has been and will be conducted to improve environmental conditions and obtain a stable renewable energy. One method that growing rapidly is microbial fuel cell (MFC). INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/33377 Energy and environmental problems are two main issues that widely discussed in recent years. Much effort has been and will be conducted to improve environmental conditions and obtain a stable renewable energy. One method that growing rapidly is microbial fuel cell (MFC). MFC generates electricity from a various organic compounds, including organic waste and biomass. These experiments studied the electricity generating potency of dual chamber MFC using wastewater from one of the tapioca industries in Padalarang, West Java. . The MFC system consisted of two chambers, anode (Pt) and cathode (Pt), which were separated by proton exchange membrane Nafion 112. Tapioca wastewater and anaerobic inoculums were put in the anode chamber operated in an anaerobic condition. While the cathode chamber filled with electrolyte solution and operated in an aerobic condition. The open circuit voltage value gained by this system is 577 mV. The power density generated by this MFC is relatively small, 5,5 mW/m2. This is caused by the high value of internal resistance, 9,8 ?.m2. The high value of internal resistance in this MFC is caused by : (1) MFC two chamber architecture, (2) The competition between electrogenesys and methanogenesis bacteria and (3) Oxygen diffusion from cathode to anode. In this MFC system, the external resistance value is proportional to the voltage value but inversely proprtional to the value of COD reduction and coulombic efficiency. text
