Description
Summary:Indonesia needs new and renewable energy sources due to high increase of energy consumption. One of renewable energy source could come from the ocean by using its thermal energy. Ocean thermal energy is applicable to the ocean that has minimum 20oC temperature difference between the surface and the depth. The temperature difference then will be converted to energy with by Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion system (OTEC) which is a close thermodynamic cycle. This research focused on body of water near Sangihe and Talaud islands that are secluded on north of Sulawesi. Surface temperature data is obtained from MODIS satelite (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) from 2003-2015, while the depth temperature data is acquired from World Ocean Atlas 2013. The result show the 20oC temperature difference for the whole year is attained on 400 m depth. This present a great potential of OTEC system application. Variance of temperature difference (?T) has massive effect on power production of the system. In Sangihe-Talaud, the system could produce up to 2.1 MW for ?T (0-400). In other side, ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscilation) give effect by reducing surface temperature up to 1oC which reducing the generated power 0.3 MW during El Nino and increasing surface temparature 1oC during La Nina which increasing the generated power 0.3 MW. Kelapa area has the biggest potential to apply OTEC system for Sangihe island with average production of power about 2.37 MW, while Aduma area for Talaud islands respectively with average production of power about 2.4 MW. Optimum time of OTEC system for 400 m depth is on May.
