Study of The Influence of Ladle Holding Time To The Impact Resistance, Hardness, and Microstructure of Nodular Cast Iron FCD 700
Nodular cast iron is one classification of cast iron which in the casting process, nodulizers was added on molten metal, so that the graphite structure will be nodular. The nodular shape of the graphite structure results in good combination of hardness and ductility in cast iron. In this study, 3 va...

The nodular shape of the graphite structure results in good combination of hardness and ductility in cast iron. In this study, 3 variations of ladle holding time were applied during the FCD700 nodular cast iron casting process i.e. 107 s, 304 s, and 500 s. The existence of such time variation will affect the remaining Mg content contained in the cast iron so that the number and roundness of graphite will vary as well. From these parameters, the impact and hardness test is performed on the sample to determine the consistency of nodular cast iron mechanical properties. The characterization is also conducted by metallography and heat tinting. In addition, annealing process was performed on samples at 7000C for 12 hours to observe the microstructure transformation phenomenon that occurred. The annealing process resulted in matrix transformation of the sample from pearlitic to ferritic. The results obtained from this study showed that the impact resistance difference and hardness difference on samples for each parameter is not statistically significant, with probability from F value obtained from ANOVA table is greater than 5%. This demonstrates that the difference in ladle holding time up to 500 seconds will not affect the consistency of the mechanical properties of FCD700 Nodular Cast Iron text |
