Study of The Effect of Surface Preparations Variations and Hard Chromium Plating Method on SCM440H Carbon Steel (JIS)

Among functional demand on this process is to have a thicker coating layer as compared with existing. However, increasing thickness leads to a decreased in bonding strength and in most situation is also followed with the appearance of macro crack. In order to find the solution of this problem, the present study focus on the study of the influence of surface preparation with variations of treatment shot peening, sand blasting and polishing. It is expected, variation of surface treatment might produce better mechanical bonding between substrate and plating layer. Another topic developed in the present research is variations of coating method with two variations which is conventional electroplating and flow plating. The coating results were characterized using an optical microscope, hard test microvickers and EPMA. The surface roughness values show significantly different results between the three surface preparations. From cross-sectional observations, the coating bonds on sand blasting and shot peening steel showed better interface appearance than polishing sample. From the cross-sectional observations of the plating layer, it was observed that the flow plating sample provide a layer surface with a more homogeneous thickness than conventional electroplating. From the hardness test data, it was obtained higher hardness data of flow plating sample than conventional electroplating sample. text
