Description
Summary:Research has been conducted about production of PLA and cellulose bio-composites from OPEFB. OPEFB’s cellulose has been successfully isolated through a series of treatment so that the content of lignin and hemi-cellulose is reduced. This OPEFB cellulose has a crystallinity that is not much different from commercial cellulose (microcrystalline cellulose/MCC), its microscopic size, and thermal degradation rate is higher than MCC. Then bio-composite films have been produced through solvent casting method with the addition of OPEFB’s cellulose up to 30 wt%. The results of characterization of bio-composite films in the form of mechanical properties such as elongation, biodegradation properties, and resistance to light are enhanced by the addition of cellulose. Gas barrier properties of bio-composite films decreases, due to its hydrophilic nature. An appropriate amount of cellulose added is 10 wt% and with a small cellulose size (2.3 ?m). This bio-composite film gives a good WVP value and percent elongation. The biodegradation properties of bio-composite films also are enhanced by the addition of cellulose. This is supported by the morphological results that bio-composite films formed cellulose aggregation like network of porous spheres. Furthermore, production of bio-composite films can be used as a paper coating for further application as food packaging.
