ANALYSIS OF INDONESIAN THROUGHFLOW (ITF) TRANSPORT IN MAKASSAR AND LOMBOK STRAIT BASED ON HAMSOM SIMULATION DURING 2010 - 2014

Analysis of Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) transport was studied by examining the calculation of monthly average transport and correlation analysis, and also the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis of wind’s influence strength, El Ni o Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)...

The source was taken from current velocity of HAMburg Shelf Ocean Model (HAMSOM)’s baroclinic model with grid 1/10o x 1/10o and 39 layer for Indonesia’s ocean territory from 11oLU – 12oLS and 92.5oBT – 132oBT during 2010 - 2014. Another supporting data such as v-wind from NCEP/NCAR, Oceanic Ni o Index (ONI), and Dipole Mode Index (DMI) were used to find the season’s influence strength, ENSO and IOD. The result shows that the average ITF transport during 2010 - 2014 at 0 – 350 m depth is -9.93 Sv (Transect 1 at northern Makassar Strait); -5.6 Sv (Transect 2 at southern Makassar Strait); and -1.05 Sv (Transect 3 at Lombok Strait). According to EOF result for component v transport (0 – 52 m), the ITF transport variation influenced by interannual variability (92%) from ENSO (La Nina) and disruption from IOD, also seasonal variability from monsoon wind (5%) in Java and Flores Sea. Throughout the normal year 2010 – 2014, ITF transport in Makassar and Lombok Strait are still more affected by wind. The influence of wind on variation of transport in Transect 1, 2, and 3 in a row has a correlation of 0.26; 0.39; and 0.57 with the tendencies of transport gained during northwest monsoon (-8.95 Sv; -6.18 Sv; dan -1.49 Sv) and southeast weakend at the time (-10.39 Sv; -5.5 Sv; dan -0.86 Sv), except on Transect 1 due to stronger effect of interannual variability. Monsoon wind, ENSO, and also IOD’s influence of ITF transport shows transport strengthening in Transect 1,2, and 3 about 4.9%; 21.2%; and 26.7% from their average transport, happened in 2011 – 2012 during northwest monsoon, La Nina, and DM positive phase. Otherwise, transport weakening about 0.16%; 7.5%; and 27% happened in 2013 during southeast monsoon, normal ENSO, and DM negative phase. text
