Summary: | Empty palm fruit bunches (EFB) is one of waste palm oils industries which have a lot many potential. Empty palm fruit bunches contains high hemicellulose which can be treated to become high product commercial, such as xylitol. Xylitol is sugar alcohol, it can be used as diabetic sugar. Xylitol can produce in two ways, chemical and biological. Production of xylitol by chemical process has some weakness, such as need a high pressure, so biological process will be alternative method for xylitol production.
In biological processes, lignocellulose was hydrolysate with xylanase enzyme, and then hydrolysate solution was process again by fermentation process with D.hansenii. So fermentation broth was produced. In this experiment, model fermentation broth was also produced with xylose as substrate and model permeate ultrafiltration broth. Besides consist xylitol, fermentation hydrolysis solutions still contain others product, such as ethanol, organic acids, and other chemical compounds. Therefore some technology is required for eliminate other product.
Downstream processing with membrane process become alternative method to concentrate xylitol from fermentation hydrolysis of empty palm fruit bunches solutions. This process used three kinds of membrane, there are ultrafiltration (UF), UF tight and nanofiltration (NF). Microorganisms can be remove 99% from model fermentation broth and xylitol concentration increase 4,9 gr/L ? 6,07 gr/L ? 9,34 gr/L by UF and NF, but microorganisms was still detected when separation with centrifugation process and NF. And microorganism and colour were also decreased from fermentation hydrolysate EFB broth. High concentration of xylitol was achieved by model permeate UF, it is 3,32 gr/L to 10,97 gr/L.
