Summary: | The oil reserves in Indonesia are decreasing until now with increasing oil
consumption. Biofuel is a fuel derived from renewable natural resources which can
be processed into vegetable oil obtained from plants. Nyamplung oil that contain
40-73% on the kernel seeds as a source of biofuel.
Nyamplung seed oil were obtained at 70-90°C preheating temperature for 10-30
minutes by mechanical press; extraction with n-hexane using Soxhlet at 20-40 mesh
kernel sieving and temperature of 80°C for 6-8 hours; degumming with the addition
of 0.1-0.3%-w/w oil of 85% H3PO4; neutralization with addition of 0-4%-w/w
exceeded oil acid value KOH; bleaching for 15-30 minutes using earth ground
bentonite and charcoal 1%-w/w oil each; and characterization of the oil before and
after refining in the form of the acid value, saponification value, iodine value,
peroxide value, unsaponification matter content, and phosphorus content.
The result showed that oil obtained from mechanical extraction are better than
Soxhlet extraction. Degumming, neutralization, and bleaching were required to
refine oil without ignoring one refining process. Refined oil were obtained
contained 0.14 mg KOH/gr oil acid value, 156.49 mg KOH/gr oil saponification
value, 90.42 gr I2/100 gr oil iodine value, 0.99 meq O2/kg oil peroxide value, 0,18%-
w/w unsaponification matter content, and 35,35 mg P/kg oil phosphorus content.
