INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/33858 Gears are made of various materials with various manufacturing processes. This research consists of OES characterization, metallography, macro etching, and hardness testing which aims to determine the manufacturing process of a spur gear made of AISI 1050 and determine whether surface hardening was done to improve its wear resistance. OES characterization aims to determine the gear’s material. Metallography and hardness testing are divided into initial stage for identification of the gear’s material and final stage to answer this research’s objectives. Macro etching is done to see the treatment uniformity on the specimen’s surface. Metallographic results show that the phases formed are proeutectoid ferrite and pearlite which show that the gear is a result of an annealing process and the grains formed are flat that indicates the manufacturing process is forging. Macro etching results show that the treatment on the entire surface is uniform. Hardness testing results show that hardness in all parts of the gear are relatively the same and in the hardness range of annealed medium carbon steel. It can be concluded that the spur gear’s manufacturing process is forging and there in no surface hardening process done to improve its wear resistance. text |
