A polymer electrolyte membrane is one of an alternative solution to replace the liquid electrolyte. This research aimes to synthesize and characterize polymer electrolyte membrane of poly(vinyl alcohol), LiClO4 and nanocellulose for lithium ion battery aplication. The characterization of polymer electrolyte membranes includes ionic conductivity, mechanical and thermal properties. Nanocellulose that used in this study was produced by hydrolysis of cellulose by using a solution of 50 % H2SO4 at 40 °C for 10 minutes. Cellulose was obtained by isolation of a bagasse of sugar cane. Nanocellulose was characterized by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Particle Size Analyzer (PSA), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). The synthesis of polymer electrolyte membranes were carried out by dissolving poly(vinyl alcohol) and LiClO4 in distilled water with different concentration of LiClO4 from 5 %; 10 %; 15 %; 20 % and 25 %. Then, the solution was cast on plate glass and dried in room temperature for 2-3 days. The ionic conductivity and mechanical properties of membranes formed were analyzed by using Impedance spectroscopy (IS) and Tensile tester, respectively. The optimal composition of LiClO4 in the polymer electrolyte membrane based on the ionic conductivity and mechanical properties was obtained in the LiClO4 ratio of 15 %, and this ratio was used to prepare the polymer electrolyte membrane with variation composition of the nanocellulose from 2.5 %; 5 %; 7.5 %, and 10 %. Based on the analysis of TEM and PSA, nanocellulose has spherical morphology and an average diameter of 111 nm with a maximum distribution of 95.9 nm. The crystallinity index of nanocellulose determined by using X-Ray diffraction spectrogram was higher than that of the isolated cellulose, 76.01 % for nano cellulose and 70,62 % for the isolated cellulose. The addition of nanocellulose about 5 % in the polymer electrolyte membranes of PVA/LiClO4 can improve the ionic conductivity from 1.99x10-5 S/cm to become 3.76x10-4 S/cm, however the value of modulus at break decreases from 10.94 MPa to 4.13 MPa. Based on TGA analysis, the polymer electrolyte membranes of PVA/LiClO4/nanocellulose is thermally stable until 252,15 °C. text
